Visions of Islam VISIONS
OF ISLAM - Stephen Stapleton, - Art and
Education
Stephen Stapleton, artist, teacher and Creative Director of iNOMAD, and part of
the Visions of Islam project presents a new role for the artist in modern
exploration that's defined more in terms
of education, local interaction and collaboration than the distant colonial
legacy of the past. From September 2002-July 2003, Stephen was among a group of
young British artists who have been embedded in the Islamic heart of the Middle
East. Travelling in their mobile studio from England, they journeyed through
Turkey, Iran, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan,
Syria and Egypt. Collaborating with local artists and writers and supported by
the British Council, the team hosted a series of exhibitions and workshops in
Tehran, Esfahan, Muscat, Sana'a, Abha and Amman. Along with a nationwide lecture
tour and educational book, there are further exhibitions confirmed at the
Islamic
Cultural Centre of Norway and Prince of Wales Foundation in London.
