Aims

The festival aims are to promote the historical and spiritual aspects of adventure in the realm of contemporary geographical exploration and appreciate the explorers’ role and contribution to our understanding of the Spirit of Adventure.

Location

The festival will take place in the modern canal side venue of the Brycheiniog Theatre in Brecon, Mid-Wales, in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This theatre boasts a state of the art 470 seat auditorium as well as a 150 seat studio, art gallery, bar and restaurant.

Other venues include a magnificent  cathedral, cinema, indoor climbing wall complex and several outdoor education centres. Local sports facilities include white water kayaking, canoeing, caving, hill walking and climbing as well as mountain biking and horse trekking.

 Brecon is ideally situated within Powys, Mid-Wales and is accessible to a large population from the Midlands, South Wales and Bristol. It is only 3 hours from London via motorway.

 As summer host to the famous Brecon International Jazz Festival, the town benefits from a well developed, tourist infrastructure and is well served with good pubs, restaurants and various levels of accommodation.

Audience

The festival is aimed at those who are, or were, active enthusiasts in the outdoors (demo A, B, C1). They are interested in multiple facets of travel, adventure and exploration whether by participation or via television, books and magazines. They take an interest in the adventures of others and are aware of some of the famous names and their exploits which have contributed to the history of exploration.

The age of the audience ranges from young people (14+) with a developing interest in outdoor sports to retired ‘adventurers’ who may or may not be still active in the outdoors. The main audience is expected to be 30-45. The total number of places over the weekend is approx. 8000.

Festival Events

The main festival events will include lectures, debates, interviews, multi-media presentations and exhibitions taken from the following genres: mountaineering, caving, kayaking, sailing, polar, diverse sporting and cultural exploration.
