04 October 2003 The Next Generation - A Brave New World As part of the Brecon Festival of Exploration, iNOMAD presents the new generation of explorers, young men and women who are radically progressing our understanding and perception of the world. How do you combine techonology with indigenous tribes? The Kon Tiki with sustainable development? Cameras, the UN with Aids Sufferers & Kabul Street Kids? Bono and Dennis Hopper with a modern Baraka? Art and education with a journey into the heart of Islam? Brave New World is a visually dynamic, hosted, multi-presenter, multi-media session combining film, music, interactive presentations, spoken word, art, photography and the latest technology. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Format § Introduction 5minutes § Each speaker presents his/her project for 15 minutes § 15 minute + open floor discussion and Q & A facilitated by the host. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Projects & Speaker Biography RUNNING MAN - Justin Hall- Technology and Indigenous People (www.runningman.tv) Justin Hall, founder and MD of 'Runningman - Interactive Tribal Journeys' talks about the role of technology in the future of exploration. Running Man utilising the latest satellite, film and computer technologies to create interactive web, educational and broadcast platforms that focus on ecological problems and the forces effecting tribal and indigenous communities around the world. Justin's latest series is broadcast on Discovery Networks. 1 GIANT LEAP - Jamie Catto - One world through music and Film (www.1giantleap.tv ) A 21st Century Baraka, 1 Giant Leap is a music/film based time capsule of planet earth now -a fusion of spoken word, musicians, sounds, rhythms and images from around the world with contributions from the world's leading philosophers, artists, explorers (including Brian Eno, Jerry Sadowitz, Bono, Anita Roddick, Robbie Williams, Dennis Hopper). A very modern exploration of the predicament of being a human. PHOTOVOICE, POSITVE NEGATIVES - Tiffany Fairey (www.photovoice.org) - Photography and NGOs & Reflexivity PhotoVoice is an international non-profit organisation, specialise in photographic training for marginalised groups of people around the world. Working alongside both international non-government organisations and local groups we provide in the field training in photography and documentary skills for those whose views are marginalised within society. Our projects to date have included work with refugees, streetchildren, children in need and women living with HIV. PhotoVoice help these groups to raise awareness of their lives through photography and to generate an income though their new found skills. MIDGARD - James Wallace - Kon-Tiki & Sustainable progression (www.midgardexpedition.org) James Wallace, holistic scientist, poet, archaeologist and co-founder of Midgard talks about the next leap for mankind - our sustainable progression and the three principles of modern exploration: Discovery, Dissemination and Delivery (effecting change). Led by Bjorn Heyerdahl, the grandson of the late Thor's Heyerdahl's (Kon Tiki 1947), Midgard is a 3-year circum-navigation of the world by Viking long boat, Marsh Arab Reed Boat and Chinese Junk, and all back-up a research vessel, an 85ft schooner equipped with the latest scientific research, media production and communications equipment. VISIONS OF ISLAM - Stephen Stapleton, - Art and Education (www.visionsofislam.co.uk) Stephen Stapleton, artist, teacher and Creative Director of iNOMAD, and part of the Visions of Islam project presents a new role for the artist in modern exploration that's defined more in terms of education, local interaction and collaboration than the distant colonial legacy of the past. From September 2002-July 2003, Stephen was among a group of young British artists who have been embedded in the Islamic heart of the Middle East. Travelling in their mobile studio from England, they journeyed through Turkey, Iran, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Egypt. Collaborating with local artists and writers and supported by the British Council, the team hosted a series of exhibitions and workshops in Tehran, Esfahan, Muscat, Sana'a, Abha and Amman. Along with a nationwide lecture tour and educational book, there are further exhibitions confirmed at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Norway and Prince of Wales Foundation in London. 15 August 2003 Friday Evening Festival Opening Ceremony - to be hosted by special guests Alexander Shackleton and Robert Headland, director of the Scott Polar Institute in a tribute to Polar Exploration and Alexanders grandfarther - Sir Ernest Shackleton Saturday Evening Spirit of Adventure Special - Guests include members of the 1953 Everest first ascent team - George Band and Mike Westmacott in a unique live interview hosted by Channel 4 star presenter Alice Plunkett including the pioneering mountaineer Kirt Diemburger and aeronautical pioneer Brian Milton 15 August 2003 Members of the 1953 Everest team including George BAnd to appear during the Saturday evening Gala. Gala Polar night to be hosted by Robert Headland - Director of the Scott Polar Institute 14 August 2003 Kurt Diemberger, John Hare and Alan Hinkes join our list of guest speakers. Alaxandra Shackleton, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s grand daughter, is to open the event. The replica of the James Caird, as used by Trevor Potts and Robert Eglestaff in their “Wake of Shackleton” expedition, is to be on display during the festival. We’re also thinking about the kids during the weekend!
