Kurt Diemberger is the only person alive today to have made first ascents of two of the world’s 8,000-metre mountains. In 1957, with Hermann Buhl and two other companions, he scaled the 8047m Broad Peak without the assistance of bottled oxygen or high-level porters – in “West Alpine Style”,

Caroline Hamilton was leader of the first British all-women's team to ski to the South Pole in 1999/2000 and of the all-women's relay team which went to the North Pole in 1997. These expeditions are vividly described in her book To The Pole which is published by Virgin. As a child, Caroline loved reading stories of the Arctic and Antarctic and it was her vision of ordinary women taking on the challenge of a polar expedition that first inspired her.

Doug Scott has made 45 expeditions to the high mountains of Asia, and reached the summit of 40 peaks, of which half were first ascents, and all were climbed by new routes or for the first time in Alpine style. He has reached the highest peaks on all seven continents (The Seven Summits), and is a past President of the Alpine Club.

Brian Milton is a born adventurer. His first major expedition was in 1968 when he drove a battered Austin 7 Ruby across the Sahara Desert to meet his fiancée!! The car ran for 2000 miles on three pistons and 900 miles without brakes. In addition, its springs, starter motor, starting handle, shock absorbers, rear window and lights were all broken before it expired in the north east Congo.

Paul 'skinny' Jones has conquered many first descents of previously unpaddled rivers in various exotic locations around the world. We're talking white-water mayhem of the highest order. He's recently returned from one of his adventures in Ecuador and tonight he'll be sharing his stories of jungle wild trekking and near death canoeing with the audience.

Alan Hinkes  Challenge 8000 a humorous and entertaining account drawing on unique film footage taken during Alan’s attempt to become the first Britain to climb all of the world’s 8000 meter peaks. So far he has succeeded in reaching the summit of twelve, including Everest and K2.

John Thomas The Desert of Death member of the joint British / Chinese expedition to complete the first traverse of the foreboding, Chinese Taklimakan Desert. This incredible journey of over 90 days in extreme conditions overcame major logistical and technical difficulties utilising both camels and specialised vehicles and has never been repeated.

Peter Bray successfully circumnavigated the UK in a kayak with a partially sighted paddler in 1996 . Conditions were so rough at times that Peter suggested, tongue-in-cheek, that it would be easier to cross the Atlantic. The idea took root and in June 2001 Peter set off from Newfoundland in a specially designed 27ft kayak to successfully become the first person to paddle the North Atlantic completely unaided.

Jim Hargreaves is a  legendary figure of the British outdoor scene whose own accomplishments include the first circumnavigation of Cape Horn by sea kayak and the first British descent of the Grand Canyon and Bio Bio river. Jim became the man for the organisation and logistics for some of the most outstanding expeditions of the last twenty years.

Martyn Farr is one of the world's most experienced cavers and cave divers. He is responsible for the discovery of many miles of cave passage worldwide and is renowned for his prolific writing.
Martyn was born in Cwmdu, Wales, began caving at the age of ten and was discovering new caves by the age of 16. He began cave diving in 1971 and by 1981 had established a world record for underwater cave penetration in the Bahamas.

Trevor Potts works freelance as an Outdoor Education Teacher, Antarctic Cruise Lecturer and Motivational Speaker. Trevor was one of a five member team which took part in The Shackleton Memorial Expedition  completing Shackleton’s route across South Georgia in March 2001. In addition to a number of other sailing expeditions, he has also kayaked in Arctic Norway, Canada and Alaska including kayaking across the Bering Strait in 1989.

George Band was among the team to first summit Everest with Edmund Hillary in 1953. George has some remarkable stories of this pioneering adventure, including the first ascent of Kanchenjunge with Jo Brown. Has just returned from an exploratory expedition from the Shaksgam, China. And has just published "Everest, the first 50 years".
